1. Pay

This is the last thing you want to happen when you go on your first date with a girl. Yes, take her to a fancy restaurant, but not somewhere that you can't afford or don't invite her round for a meal and order in some pizza and expect her to pay. The last thing you want to happen is that your date ends up forking out, at your expense as she probably won't want another date afterwards.

The sign of a successful date, the girl smiling and the guy handing over the check with a big wad of cash inside that has come straight out of his wallet. If you pay then you've got more chance of taking the girl, who could potentially be 'the one' on another date, which is what every guy wants!

2. Location

The last place you want to go on your first date with a girl, if you want to avoid it becoming your last date with her it, is the cinema. This is somewhere that you'll spend at least an hour and a half, if not more, in silence. On a first date, you want to be getting to know each other, so sitting in silence and watching a horror in the hope that you may be able to use the age old 'stretch and put your arm around her' trick, probably isn't an ideal place to go.

A fairground is a good place to go. A place that you'll be left alone, you can both talk to each other and have a good laugh when you go on the rides. If you wanted to be an ol' romantic you could try and win her a teddy or even a goldfish. Obviously there are many other places that you can go, the age old classic, a restaurant, which of course never fails to impress.

3. Grooming

One of the most important things before a date is to make sure you're looking your best. The last thing you want to be doing before a date is looking really scruffy or looking like you've made too much effort. Depending on where you're going for your date should depend on how you dress and how presentable you are.

Don't try too hard to impress your date either. If you met her somewhere that you weren't exactly looking your best then don't try too hard to impress her. The last thing you want is to put her off by going out and buying new clothes.

4. Conversation

One of the most awkward things that could happen on a date is that there is absolutely no spark between the two people and there's no conversation going on between the two of them. If you've asked a girl out on a date then you should try your best to make her laugh, smile and engage her in conversation.

DO NOT talk about yourself all the time, though. You should ask her things about herself and her family, job etc. Also, don't talk about ex girlfriends or previous dates. Unless of course she asks you, you don't want to be ignorant.

5. Timing of the Date and Gifts

It's always a good idea to take a gift with you on a first date, as they say you don't get a second chance to make a first impression. Don't go over the top with a gift, though. If you want to impress her then yes, take her a gift but something like a rose, or bunch of roses or maybe even a box of chocolates. Don't go out spending loads of money on a necklace, or a bracelet.

Also, the timing of the date is imperative. You don't want to be out on a date for hours and hours on end. You may both end up getting bored of each other and become fed up and then it's a case of who makes the first move to leave. Now that can be awkward.

6. Friends

Quite simple, keep your friends as far away from your date as possible. If you're thinking about taking one of your friends on a date with you there are a number of things that may happen and could very easily make the situation extremely awkward.

For example, you could find that you get on really well with the person you're meeting for a date and your friend becomes really left out. Or, even worse your friend could get on better with your date than you, thus leaving you out in the cold. Or you could end up spending the night laughing and joking with your friend and leave your date totally out.
